Academy of Harran

Academy of Harran is a rapidly developing institution, enrolling over 5000 new students each year. It is located in a neoclassical building that dates back to 1720. Over the course of the last 300 years, it has been reconstructed and renovated multiple times, including recent changes to the stained glass ceiling in the library. These reconstructions have created a truly unique spot on Harran’s map.

The building of the Academy is a rare combination of neoclassical and oriental architecture. Its outside walls are decorated with Moorish and Arabic arabesques and ornaments, which combined with neoclassical elements create a coherent structure that merges architectural styles of the West and the East.

The Academy has a spacious courtyard, where open air lectures used to take place. It also houses a gorgeous library, founded 1890 by Galip Azmi – a generous emir who not only financed its construction but also donated his own private collection of precious manuscripts and books.

Today the Academy of Harran is divided into 5 faculties, which altogether offer 28 different fields of study.
